Artist Statement long - Nadia-Anne Ricketts, Founder and artist of BeatWoven Ever since I can remember my overriding passion has been for music and its extraordinary power to emote and inspire. As a professional dancer, this passion guided me on a ten year journey around the world, travelling, living and absorbing the vibrant musical cultures of over thirty-five countries. As I immersed myself in the global music spectrum, experiencing the deep social and spiritual connections music held within each and every society, I discovered the key to an emotive, universal language, capable of transcending boundaries in one beautiful, unifying, connecting voice. It is completely natural to me to express and celebrate music through my current practice of woven textiles. Just as music connects and unites individuals, cultures and generations, so does it transcend sensorial boundaries. Music makes us feel, remember, imagine. Music makes us see. Through the creation of award winning woven art label BeatWoven, I translate music into a new visual dimension. Weaving sound into vision, enhancing emotion and connecting the senses in a new multi-dimensional art form. Our world is fabricated with textile patterns all designed to make us feel....glamorous...fun...vibrant, but what if pattern went below the surface texture of style, what if pattern could literally translate and communicate the intrinsic emotion and meaning contained within music? Whilst studying weave at Central Saint Martins in 2008, I discovered my answer. At times I would feel like my loom was an instrument, conducting the thread in a rhythmic symphony of colour. Each pattern guided by the rise and fall, the rhythm and lyricism of the musical notation. Yet only when I delved deeper into the enigmatic science behind the patterns of music and weave did I see the true structural connection between these expressive mediums. There is a deep mathematical core that links the construction of music and architecture of weave, uniting them at their very foundations, and I became fascinated with the ability to manifest the power of music within our visual and physical realm. By combining the senses, the fusion between textiles, pattern and sound illuminates a whole new dimension for design, enhancing our deep human connection to music and our emotional connection to the spaces in which we live. After several collaborative projects with music producers and software developers, the first prototype of the BeatWoven software was spun. Translating the music into visual pixels that fuse with the digital jacquard loom, the hidden patterns are revealed, a lyrical snapshot of a previously hidden world. Although modern innovation and digital technology has provided the possibility of bridging the gap between music and textiles, hand craftsmanship, detailing and fine art are the foundations of the process. Keeping the intimate and personal craft of the artisan alive within the UK weaving tradition is integral in my practice. Like any composer, once the musical photograph has been captured, I conduct the song, editing, looping, and directing the aesthetic narrative. Every song has a story, and through colour, texture and yarn I bring them to visual life.
Through BeatWoven, I want to give people the opportunity to feel closer to their music experiences through their art and design choices, in a beautiful and magical way.
